Q: What are good comics/cartoons for a n00b who wants to get to know DR. DOOM better?

I’m going with the assumption that you’re also a n00b to the Marvel universe because your usual attitude when we talk is EW COMICS D:. But! I’m delighted to hear that I have stockholmed another person into liking Doctor Doom. Everything is going according to plan!

If you are looking for SRS BUSINESS Doom, I recommend Books of Doom by Ed Brubaker. If you have a short attention span, you’ll be glad to hear that this is a six issue miniseries. It is also fairly self contained, in that you don’t need to know about the other kabillion characters in the Marvel Universe. In it, you get to read all about Doom’s origin and rise to power, as told from the point of view of Doctor Doom himself. I really like the artwork by Pablo Raimondi and Mark Farmer as well. I should mention that this series was one of the first Doom-centric books I picked up, if that tells you anything about how I was sold on Doom.

While this next recommendation is more about the Fantastic Four than it is Doctor Doom, you might as well know more about them, as that annoying Reed Richards has always been Doom’s primary adversary. Fantastic Four: 1 2 3 4 by Grant Morrison is short, at four issues, but the artwork by Jae Lee is simply stunning. There are other villains, as well as a certain arrogant prince who is in a moral gray area. But who is pulling all the strings?

Another good miniseries is Doctor Doom and the Masters of Evil. Set in the Marvel Adventures universe, it’s more goofy. It’s about Doctor Doom teaming up with other villains, so you can look forward to infighting and double-crossing hijinks.

For some classic Doctor Doom, Marvel Super-Villain Team Up delivers. This seventeen issue run, which first started in 1975, covers the adventures of Doctor Doom and Namor. Just imagine what happens when two people with massive egos try to team up. This should be titled “Doom tries to be BFFs with Namor and vice versa but then they have lots of fights and once in while another supervillain shows up!” but I guess that title was too long?

If you want to dig into other loooooong running series that Doom has appeared in, why that could inspire another long-winded post! He has appeared most often in Fantastic Four. His first appearance was in Fantastic Four #5, way back in 1962. He has also appeared in other books like Thor and Avengers, and even in some unexpected places like Dazzler, and The Punisher.

I hope that’s enough to get you started!
