Answer:

“Derp” is basically used to describe something that looks stupid, like a facial expression, especially one where the eyes are not going in the same direction. Saying something looks or is “derpy” is poking fun at something like for example “Look at that derpy little dog that just ran into the wall! Bless its little heart!”

The term has been tainted in that meaner spirited people have used it to make fun of developmentally disabled people, usually in image meme form. Some argue that this is the origin of “derp”, but I don’t know if that has been confirmed or not.

Frankly, I think “derp” is overused, much like “epic”. And I’d rather not use a term that has been associated with poking fun at the developmentally disabled.

There are other words to describe clumsy animals and goofy facial expressions, why not use those?
